69. Mumbai and Kanthi Division - Revival of Laxminarayan Sanatan Movement

Shri Keshavlal Damji Limbani
– Mulund

The Sanatan movement, which had been dormant for some time, was revitalized by the arrest of Mr. Rameshbhai Waghdia in February 2009 at Nakhtrana. As a result, a massive meeting was held at Ghatkopar Patidar Wadi in Mumbai zone, where Sanatan community members urged the Shree Samaj to release a “White Paper”. The Shree Samaj subsequently released the “White Paper” in March 2009, and the golden jubilee program of Shree Samaj celebrated in 2010 was conscious of this.

In August 2011, after the election of elder Shri Gangaram Bhai Sankhla as the President of Shri Akhil Bharatiya Kutch Kadwa Patidar Samaj, Nakhtrana, he attended the Saraswati Samman program of the students at Shree Mandvi Hostel. At that time, Satpanthi brothers present made insulting comments in the presence of responsible brothers of Sanatan of Mandvi area. This hurt the hearts of some leaders of the Kanthi department Sanatani brothers and became a turning point in the awareness of the Sanatan movement in the Kanthi division of Mandvi taluk. As a result, the “Sri Kanthi Department K. K. P. Lakshminarayan Sanatan Samaj managed group marriage committee” came into existence.

The Kanthi department gave such vigor to the Sanatan movement that it reverberated at an all-India level. The first meeting of the Kanthi Department affiliated committee was held on 09 11 2011 at Mandvi Hostel under the chairmanship of the committee president, Mr. Keshavlal Damji Limbani. The leading elders of the Kanthi department were present and gave Sanatan guidance.

In the past, the Kanthi department had a joint committee consisting of the brothers of Satpanth, who worked together. Both committees were involved in organizing Akhatreej’s wedding in April 2012. Lakshminarayan Samiti’s group marriage registered 75 couples, while the old Samiti registered 5 couples. The question of which committee should be allocated the Mandvi hostel arose, and the hostel construction committee was tasked with resolving the issue. The Lakshminarayan Joint Committee suggested that Kumar Hostel be given to 75 couples and Kanya Hostel to 5 couples. However, the hostel construction committee leaders succumbed to pressure from the Satpanthi brothers and did not allocate the hostel to anyone.

The leaders of the Lakshminarayan Committee and the youth were resolute, and they organized a social meeting on March 25th, 2012, at Bidda Samajwadi. Approximately 4,500 to 5,000 Jatiganga people attended the meeting, where the accurate history of Satpanth and Sanatan was presented by the leaders in the presence of Sri Gangaram Sankhla, President of Sri Samaj. This presentation was well-received by the audience. With the blessings of Lord Shri Lakshminarayan and Kuldevi Ma Umiya, the marriage was announced to be held at Kodaipul Swaminarayan Gurukul.

Due to the religious awareness among the communities of Kanthi division and the Sanatan movement, some weak-minded Sanatani and Satpanthi brothers of Mandvi taluka joined forces and decided to transfer the property of the hostel to Patidar Sarvodaya Trust in the name of Patidar Sarvodaya Trust. This decision was reported to Shri Samaj in July/August 2012.

Many of the prominent members of the Patidar Sarvodaya Trust hailed from Mumbai, so the Mumbai zone took an interest in the matter. A meeting was held on 01 12 2012 in Ghatkopar Wadi, which was attended by central society officials and other leaders. During the meeting, the president of Sri Samaj, Sri Gangarambhai Sankhla, was prevented from speaking by supporters of the local Sarvodaya and Satpanthi factions – the Sanatani and Satpanthi brothers. Ladhabhai Vishram Pokar (LV) made false arguments about the trusteeship of Shree Samaj, leading to conflict between those present. Pro-Satpanth brothers resorted to violence, resulting in a tarnished meeting. Eventually, Pramukhshri Gangaram bhai addressed the assembly briefly, stating that they were not in a position to listen to him at that moment. Instead, he wrote a letter conveying his message, which was sent to every Patidar brother living in Mumbai on 25 12 2012. After receiving the letter, the awakened communities became aware of the actions of the Mumbai leaders involved in the Mandvi Hostel case.

This event was a turning point for the Sanatan movement in Mumbai. Leaders such as Arunbhai Nakrani and Keshavlal Limbani, along with young activists Prakash Mavani, Keerti Deewani, Gautam Keshrani, and Mahendra Senghani, attended the meeting. On 06.12.2012, they met at Arunbhai’s Ghatkopar office and, after brainstorming, came up with the second plan to create the Lakshminarayan Samaj in Mumbai.

On August 12th, 2012, a meeting was held at the residence of Shri Himmat Bhai Khetani. The meeting was attended by 24 leaders, including the six brothers mentioned earlier. The discussion concluded with a decision to establish “Shri Kutch Kadwa Patidar Lakshminarayan Sanatan Samaj, Mumbai” in Mumbai. An ad hoc committee was formed, consisting of the attending members, and an additional 20 names were agreed upon via phone. The Constitution Committee was unanimously appointed as follows.

1) Ratibhai Manilal Ramani (Ghatkopar), 2) Chandulal Bhawanji Nakrani (Thana), 3) Himmatbhai Ratanshi Khetani (Ghatkopar), 4) Arunbhai Hansraj Nakrani (Ghatkopar), 5) Bhawanbhai Haribhai Limbani (Andheri), 6) Keshavlal Damji Limbani (Mulund) and 7) Gautam Manilal Keshrani (Mulund).

During a meeting on January 23, 2013, an ad hoc committee unanimously appointed Elder Shri Dhanjibhai Shivgan Rudani (Mulund/Jiyapar) as the coordinator and assigned the responsibility of co-coordinators to Shri Arunbhai Nakrani and Keshavalal Limbani. At the same meeting, the Constitution prepared by the Constitution Committee was read and presented by Mr. Bhawanbhai Limbani, who translated it from English to Gujarati. Members present at the meeting gave suggestions, which were noted and can be taken into account when the Constitution Committee and the Coordinators make changes. The constitution was then ratified unanimously by survey members present. The foundation of Lakshminarayan Sanatan Samaj was established on the day of Nirvana Tithi of Pujya Santshri Odhavaramji Maharaj, by following the path shown by him with his inspiration and grace. Sanatan’s wires in Mumbai were blown out of proportion, leading to all the Abals joining the formation of the old society. The Chariot of Lord Lakshminarayan left Sanskardham Desalpar, traveled to South Maharashtra and returned as if the real Lord Sri Lakshminarayan and Kuldevi Ma Umiya had come to bless Panvel/Kharghar/Kamotha, while the saints went to Kutch for Poonam Bharwa. During this period, people of Navi Mumbai were taken advantage of to serve Lord Lakshminarayan and Maa Umiya.

On March 30th and 31st, 2013, a social meeting was held at Dombivli Patidar Wadi to finalize the work of Mumbai Samaj Rachana. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss community formation. The meeting was attended by saints from Sanskardham and Pramukh Shri Jethabapa. During the meeting, Shri Kachchi Kadwa Patidar Laxminarayan Sanatan Samaj, Mumbai was unanimously appointed as the first President of Elder Shri Dhanjibhai Shivgan Rudani and declared the first Executive Committee by the Ad Hoc Committee. More than 10,000 life members joined the society soon after its formation. Currently, the society has over 13,000 members, which includes more than 2600 families. The community trust was registered in 2014, and land acquisition work was undertaken in August 2015 to set up a mini Sanskardham at Mumbai in response to public demand. The Bhavan Mandir of Lord Shri Lakshminarayan and Kuldevi Ma Umiya was established on the land on February 19th, 2017, covering an area of approximately 6800 sq.m. The temple has been named “Sri Lakshminarayan – Uma Dham”.

Sri Lakshminarayan is a popular deity in Kutch, and every village has a temple dedicated to him. However, the formation of Laxminarayan Samaj in Mumbai was opposed by the leaders of the Patidar Sarvodaya Trust and their supporters. The impact of this protest was seen in the 2014 election of the Mumbai Community Trust Fund, where the Lakshminarayan Panel earned its place of honor. In the 2017 election, the full Lakshminarayan panel was elected, defeating the Satpanthi supporter panel.

Thus, Lakshminarayan Samaj has become the focal point of the Sanatan movement in Mumbai. Following in its footsteps, the Mumbai Yuvak Mandal has become a full Sanatan by amending the constitution. The Mumbai Mahila Mandal is also in the process of becoming a full Sanat.
