39. Narayana Katha – The Guardian of Sanatan’s Consciousness

Kirtibhai Dinesh Diwani
– Thana

The Sabar region of the Shree Akhil Bharatiya Kutch Kadva Patidar Yuva Sangh is the second most populous area in our community after Kutch. It includes the Sabarkantha and Aravalli districts, along with predominantly agricultural regions in Banaskantha, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Kheda, and Mahisagar districts. The Sabar region spans across seven districts, extending from Kapadvanj to Amirgarh and from Vijaynagar to Gandhinagar, comprising 350 villages and farms as well as 8 divisional societies. The organization of Sanatan is an example of excellence for this region, serving as a testament to the unwavering dedication of both the youth and elders towards Sanatan Dharma. It is a remarkable achievement for the community, demonstrating their strong commitment to their faith.

The President of our Central Samaj, Shri Gangarambhai Sankhla, and his team in Nakhatrana decided to celebrate the 130th birth anniversary of Shri Narayan Ramji Limbani in a grand manner. On this occasion, they were entrusted with the task of organizing an innovative program.

In addition to Dr. Vasant Dholu, a Botany professor at the college, teachers from Trinity School in Talod also joined in. The school introduced a unique approach to teaching history through video and audio, which captured the students’ interest. This gave birth to a new idea: presenting small incidents from the history of the Sanatan community in the form of a drama, while other aspects could be presented through films. Furthermore, a narrator could sit on the podium and present the story of Sanatan with music in a single session. This approach would allow both the youth and elders to enjoy it and unknowingly become aware of their history. This experiment was approved, and it was decided to present “Shri Narayan Katha” in a format combining song, music, video, audio, and storytelling.

Prof. Ashish Thakar, a resident of Visnagar, wrote a theatrical script based on 7 to 8 songs of Sanatan. The play features characters played by youths from families in Rushat Kampa, including Ronak, Jigar, Madhusudan, Bhargav, Jaideep, and Sanjay Ravani from Rozad. Mahendrabhai Dholu from Takhatgarh serves as the violinist. This story was first presented experimentally at Rushat Kampa by Shri Narayan.

On May 25, 2013, a large crowd from the community gathered at Patangan, Boarding in Nakhatrana to witness “Shri Narayan Katha” presented by Shri Samaj. Incidents from Narayan Bapa’s life were dramatized and narrated, evoking intense emotions like passion and tears in the audience. Constant applause and enthusiastic response from the audience boosted the team’s morale. After two hours, the first presentation of “Shri Narayan Katha” was completed, initiating a new Sanatan experiment in the form of a story. This performance also showcased the Dr. Vasant Dholu College Yuva Sangh in a new light, highlighting their important role as narrators.

Over 4000 people attended this meeting, including Samaj President Gangarambhai Sankhla, former President Ramjibhai Nakrani, former Yuva Sangh President Jayantibhai Ramani, Himmatbhai Khetani, Abjibhai Kanani, Dr. Shantilal Senghani, Yuva Sangh-Mahila Sangh workers, and other social activists. The drama-song-video-story format was well-received by all social classes and helped in preserving the history of Sanatan.

In the story, P. Narveer Pu. Narayan Ramji Limbani meets Keshara Parmeshwar, Sant Shri Pu. Lalram Maharaj, Sant Shri Pu. Odhavram Maharaj, Hon. Ratanshi Khetani, and Pandit. Weaving together the works of Sanatan done by Narayan Ramji, invitations started pouring in from across India to present “Shri Narayan Katha” as “Sanatan Gatha.” The second Katha was held at Kalidas Natya Griha in Mulund, Mumbai, and the third was held in Ankleshwar.

The Piranapanthis could not accept the planning of “Sanatan Gatha” at Himmatnagar (Nalinkanth Gandhi Hall) and petitioned the Collector to stop it. That night, the police chief asked Dr. Vasant Dholu to quickly explain the situation regarding protests against the planned “Sanatan Gatha” event in Himmatnagar’s Nalinkanth Gandhi Hall. A Piranapanthi, a member of the community, had petitioned the Collector to stop the event.

Dr. Dholu explained that the aim of Sanatan Gatha is to educate people about the struggles of the Sanatan community in India, similar to the teachings of famous freedom fighters like Sardar Patel, Gandhiji, and Subhash Chandra. He assured the police that the event would remain peaceful and urged them to keep an officer present.

He also explained that the Piranapanthi had presented false information about the event and requested the police to take appropriate action if necessary.

During the event, attended by 1200 members of the Sanatan community, the police publicly acknowledged that they were unaware of the struggles of the Sanatan community and that the claims made by the Piranapanthi were untrue. The police assured those present that they would not face any disturbances related to the event.

The “Sanatani Narayan Katha” story infused new energy among the youth and community members, garnering immense support for the Sanatan movement. Through this story, the strength of Sanatan succeeded in winning the hearts of many who held a loose attitude. By presenting a vivid picture of the dedication of the elders of that time, large numbers of people could also be easily integrated into current social schemes. Thus, “Shri Narayan Katha” proved to be the spearhead for Shri Samaj in the Sanatan movement.

Dr. Vasant Dholu, Chairman of Yuva Sangh Sabar Zone, and the then General Secretary, Vice President, and President of Central Yuva Sangh, continued this work with the slogan “Jai Sanatan… Hai Tanatan… De Dhanadhan…”. “Shri Narayan Katha” or “Sanatan Gatha” was presented at a total of 18 places including Ankleshwar, Himmatnagar, Khirsara (Roha-Kutch), Delhi, Netra, Aurangabad, Dayapar, Naroda-Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Surat, Virani Moti, and Pondicherry. Due to this, Dr. Vasant Dholu and the Yuva Sangh Sabar team attained the good fortune of Sanatan.
