15. Vishram Bapa Nakrani – Protected the Hindu Roots

94. Khichdi(Mixture): The founder of Satpanth, Muslim Syed Imamshah, included Hindu deities like Rama and Krishna in his scriptures. His preceptor, Gadipati Kaka, was also a Muslim Syed. However, Hinduism has a belief that involves visiting the graveyard of Pirana and worshipping the graves, which may seem confusing and contradictory to those who are not familiar with both religions. The combination of Muslim scriptures and Hindu beliefs can be difficult for the average person to comprehend.

95. Motivation: In the midst of all this, Satpanth promotes the mistaken belief among the K.K.P community that they are the only true Hindus while the rest of the Hindu community is unaware of their true status. In this scenario, a leader of the community was divinely inspired to prevent his community from converting to Islam and instead urged them to retain their Hindu identity.

96. Misunderstanding: Vishram Bapa, a well-respected and visionary leader of the Nakrani community, was concerned about the potential division between Hindus and Muslims in his community. He feared that his community might convert to Islam in the future due to their religious association with a Muslim leader, which he believed was a grave mistake, as noted in sources 27 (pages 266-267) and 119 (pages 144-145). Vishram Bapa resided in Shikra31 village.

97. Took two vows taken from the community: In the year 1628-29, during Samvat 1685, Bapa fell seriously ill and was approaching his final moments. He expressed his last wish, stating that they had made a grave mistake by accepting a Muslim Syed Imamshah as their Guru. Bapa knew that the entire community could not revert back to Hinduism overnight, but he urged that over time, they should not convert to Islam and remain Hindu instead. He requested two promises:

1)    You will never stop celebrating Krishna Janmashtami as “Gokuliyan” – because of this promise the K.K.P community has always celebrated the Janmashtami32 festival of Lord Krishna.

The head (Mukhi33) of the Khana did not allow Janmashtami to be celebrated inside the “khana”. Even so, Janmashtami was celebrated on the road or on the street even after suffering inconveniences in order to keep the promise given to the father. But they did not break the promise. It should never be forgotten that the community mothers and sisters have an invaluable contribution and involvement in sustaining this custom.

2)     You shall never eat Parmati (Non Veg) When attempting to convert a Hindu to another religion, some individuals would feed them cow meat in order to mature them. However, the banning of non-vegetarianism has prevented this method of conversion. [120:Page 46]

As the spiritual leaders of Satpanthi community, the Muslim Syeds used to stay at the Kanbis’ house. They were welcomed with great respect and treated like royalty. Since they preferred non-vegetarian food, they were served with their favorite meat dishes. However, since meat was not cooked in the Kanbi household, it was sourced from another meat-eating community in Mansahar village. This was because the elder Vishram Bapa had made a promise that no meat would be cooked in their house.

The effort to convince Hindus to consume cow meat persisted. This was based on the story of the Pandavas killing a cow during the Budha Avatar. In the Satpanth tradition, a jaggery cow was sacrificed, and its pieces were distributed as prasadi [56:May-1972, Pages 8-9 (201-202 of 522)] [111:Page 9] [6:Page 29]. Had Vishram Bapa not made the promise to the community, the outcome would have been different. Today, due to shame or other reasons, no one admits to this publicly. However, behind closed doors, fundamentalists may still be practicing this.

98.    Can’t Corrupt Khanapana (Eating ways of the community): K.K.P community has been practiced to this date, but the Kakas, Syeds, Mukhis, etc. of the Pirana Satpanth have been unable to corrupt the dietary habits of this community.

99.    Could not cut Hindu roots: The Syed community was unable to detach itself from Hinduism due to their dietary restrictions and observance of Janmashtami. Shri Narayan Ramji Limbani, a communityreformer, realized that as Hindus, it was unnecessary to demean their own community. It is likely that Vishram Bapa’s two promises played a significant role in shaping his thoughts.

100.  A break in the pace of religious conversion: History is witness to how Vishram Bapa’s small step acted as a speed breaker in Pirana Satpanth’s conversion to Islam.

101.  Extra time taken: The K.K.P community was supposed to convert gradually from Hindu Lohana to Muslims, similar to how the Khojas converted. However, it did not happen on time due to two unfulfilled promises made by Vishram Bapa. As a result, the conversion process was extended beyond the original time period.

102.  Impact on the goal of the destruction of ideology: Due to the slow pace of conversion, it took the Pirana Satpanthis longer to achieve their goal of “destruction of ideology” as mentioned earlier.

103. The “thread of instability”, which we will discuss later, continued to exist. However, due to two promises made to Vishram Bapa, this trend of degradation was postponed. As a result, the only option was to wait for the appropriate time to cut the community’s Hindu roots. This allowed the seed of Sanatana within the community to have the opportunity to grow.
